IOI Connects to Earth

City Nature Challenge

IOI Connects to Earth is an umbrella campaign by IOI Properties Group (IOIPG) to create awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity conservation. The campaign focuses on capacity building of our employees and our local community through pocket talks and workshops. we also invest in community programmes that are aligned to our campaign in schools and neighbourhoods within our townships.

This campaign aims to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in conserving and enhancing the environment. Many of our community investments are directed to the young people in our communities - children and youth.

This campaign is an expansion from the "Nip it! at the source" campaign to minimise waste - food, single-use plastic, e-waste and textile waste. At IOIPG, we believe waste minimisation will positively impact the accelerated climate change and lost of biodiversity. Hence, much emphasis is given to generating awareness, increasing public participation and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

Theses efforts project our Sustainability Strategic Themes of Mindset Change, Young Urbanites and Urban Green to introduce the spirit of sustainability and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

City Nature Challenge

IOIPG has collaborated with local organisers of this global initiative, namely Sekitar Kita, Water Warriors UM and Iskandar Malaysia CNC to host this event across our Group since 2020. Prior to this, employees of IOIPG took part in the City Nature Challenge, documenting the various species of insects, birds and plants at the Bandar Puteri Town Park on the iNaturalist platform.

These events encourage the appreciation and documentation of urban biodiversity by Citizen Scientists, environment enthusiasts, and people from all walks of life. We have managed to record a total of 11,962 nature observations and 3,340 species identified over the last three years.

IOI Water for Life

IOIPG recognises water is a precious resource both in the urban and rural community. Since 2020, IOIPG has partnered our business partners and contractors in our various developments to install rainwater harvesting systems in schools, charity homes, suraus and even Orang Asli villages. Through this initiative, we encourage the urban community to take eco-friendly actions and lessen their reliance on potable water.

In 2022, IOIPG partnered Pertubuhan Komuniti Elite to provide portable water filters to Orang Asli communities who did not have access to treated or clean water. These portable water filters were innovative solutions to allow these communities access to clean and safe drinking water. Over 550 families in four villages have benefitted from this project, namely Kampung Orang Asli Gunung Arung in Endau, Johor; Kampung Orang Asli Pasir Salam in Ulu Tiram, Johor; Kampung Chemomoi in Pahang and Kampung Orang Asli, Kg Sg Lalang Baru, Hulu Langat in Selangor.
