IOI Mall Puchong is ushering in the Chinese New Year with a mischievous twist as it brings Old Master Q and his close friend Big Potato from the Lao Fuzi comic series to Puchong.

Those who grew up with the elderly, lanky man dressed in distinctive traditional Chinese attire and his friends will be thrilled to know that the shopping centre is hosting the Master Q 50th Anniversary Exhibition.

The exhibition, ongoing until Feb 22 at the new wing’s first floor, will showcase the 50-year journey of the comic series.

The comic strip by Alfonso Wong first appeared in the newspapers in Hong Kong in 1962, featuring stories of Old Master Q, Big Potato and their friends in a wide range of social scenarios with humour injected in between.

Each comic typically has four, six or 12 panels, but there are longer ones too.

Relive childhood memories as you read newspaper cuttings, admire posters and sketches, check out wall after wall of comic strips, and purchase Old Master Q and Big Potato miniature sets as well as other products at the exhibition.

Besides walking through the evolution of the comic series through the years, visitors can also enjoy a collection of rare images and hand illustrations while posing for the camera with life-size caricatures of the celebrated characters.

There will also be a colouring contest, creative contest, performances as well as Old Master Q and Big Potato walkabouts on weekends.

“This year’s theme revolves around the famous wishing tree tradition, signifying the warmth of giving and receiving blessings of health, wealth and prosperity.

“To welcome the Year of the Monkey, our team has meticulously planned a line-up of fun activities for shoppers during this auspicious occasion,” said Cheah.

In conjunction with the festive season, 21 senior citizens from The Association of Klang and Coast Chik Sin Thong Old Folks Home Selangor and Persatuan Rumah Kebajikan Ebenezer were invited to join the celebration.
