IOI Connects to Earth

City Nature Challenge

IOI Connects to Earth is an umbrella campaign by IOI Properties Group (IOIPG) to create awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity conservation. The campaign focuses on capacity building of our employees and our local community through pocket talks and workshops. we also invest in community programmes that are aligned to our campaign in schools and neighbourhoods within our townships.

This campaign aims to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in conserving and enhancing the environment. Many of our community investments are directed to the young people in our communities - children and youth.

This campaign is an expansion from the "Nip it! at the source" campaign to minimise waste - food, single-use plastic, e-waste and textile waste. At IOIPG, we believe waste minimisation will positively impact the accelerated climate change and lost of biodiversity. Hence, much emphasis is given to generating awareness, increasing public participation and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.

Theses efforts project our Sustainability Strategic Themes of Mindset Change, Young Urbanites and Urban Green to introduce the spirit of sustainability and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

IOIPG Appreciate Biodiversity

In FY2025, IOI Properties Group (IOIPG) collaborated with local NGOs including Sekitar Kita, Water Warriors UM (University Malaya), and the Iskandar Malaysia City Nature Challenge to advance biodiversity awareness and strengthen internal capacity through the IOIPG City Nature Challenge (CNC). The initiative invites participants to explore and document urban flora and fauna using the iNaturalist app.

Since its inception in 2019, this event has been a flagship program for IOIPG, aligning with the global City Nature Challenge. Introduced in 2016 by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences, the challenge encourages city residents to document urban plants and wildlife. To date, the IOIPG chapter has recorded 15,567 observations and 4,568 species across our developments in Malaysia, Singapore, and Xiamen, China.

Here are some of the species recorded in the IOIPG City Nature Challenge FY2025:

Nature Walk

Since FY2024, the Group has organised annual guided nature walks in collaboration with ecologists and NGOs, providing opportunities for employees, residents, and visitors to reconnect with nature. In FY2025, three participating business units conducted these walks, further strengthening employee engagement and environmental awareness.

These sessions, also held across Penang, IOI Resort City, and Kulai, offered valuable insights into species identification, ecosystem interdependencies, and sustainable landscaping practices, while highlighting the importance of urban biodiversity and ecological connectivity.

Waste to Treasure

As part of our ongoing commitment to promote sustainable living and reduce community waste footprints, our Klang Valley Customer
Relations Unit (CRU) organised a series of recycling drives across four IOIPG townships. These events provided residents with convenient drop-off points and encouraged the adoption of reduce, reuse, and recycle practices. Accepted recyclables included paper, cardboard, electronic waste, metals, aluminium, clothes, and used cooking oil. In return, participants received eco-friendly rewards, reinforcing positive habits and motivating repeat participation.

Participants were rewarded with vouchers based on the weight of recyclables collected, redeemable for recycled products from event partners, while lucky draws created a festive, community-driven atmosphere and reinforced the value of recycling. The events drew strong participation across all four townships, and beyond waste collection, helped raise awareness of responsible consumption, sustainable planting, and circular economy practices.

The Group had undergone two campaigns in cooperation with the Zero Waste Earth Store and successfully diverting 3,318 kg of waste from landfills in FY2025.
