IOI Connects to Earth is an umbrella campaign by IOI Properties Group (IOIPG) to create awareness on climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity conservation. The campaign focuses on capacity building of our employees and our local community through pocket talks and workshops. we also invest in community programmes that are aligned to our campaign in schools and neighbourhoods within our townships.
This campaign aims to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in conserving and enhancing the environment. Many of our community investments are directed to the young people in our communities - children and youth.
This campaign is an expansion from the "Nip it! at the source" campaign to minimise waste - food, single-use plastic, e-waste and textile waste. At IOIPG, we believe waste minimisation will positively impact the accelerated climate change and lost of biodiversity. Hence, much emphasis is given to generating awareness, increasing public participation and promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
Theses efforts project our Sustainability Strategic Themes of Mindset Change, Young Urbanites and Urban Green to introduce the spirit of sustainability and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
IOIPG Appreciate Biodiversity
In 2024, IOI Properties Group (IOIPG) partnered with environmental organizations and ecologists to promote biodiversity awareness and build internal capacity in biodiversity conservation through the IOIPG City Nature Challenge (CNC). The Group hosted the CNC Nature Observation Challenge with Sekitar Kita, engaging both its employees and the public. Additionally, we organized the Kids Nature Walk in collaboration with Club IOI, IOI Kidz Club, and Sekitar Kita, as well as a biodiversity walk at Bandar Puteri Town Park to enhance ecological understanding and conserve the park's ecosystem.
Since its inception in 2019, this event has been a flagship program for IOIPG, aligning with the global City Nature Challenge. Introduced in 2016 by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences, the challenge encourages city residents to document urban plants and wildlife. To date, the IOIPG chapter has recorded 12,451 observations and 3,549 species across our developments in Malaysia, Singapore, and Xiamen, China.
Here are some of the species recorded in the IOIPG City Nature Challenge 2024:
Fairy Parachutes
Common Sailer
Eumorphus
The Kids Nature Walk at Bandar Puteri Town Park supports the Group’s strategic themes of Mindset Change and Young Urbanites, fostering environmental awareness and empowering young people in biodiversity conservation. The Group is pleased to see parents and children learning about the local ecosystem and the importance of sustainable communities.
Earth Hour 2024
In celebration of Earth Hour in March 2024, IOIPG partnered with the Society of Wilderness Malaysia (SOWM) hosting a Nature Observation and Earth Hour Night Walk on March 23, 2024, at Bandar Puteri Puchong Town Park. The event garnered significant participation from the community.
During the nature observation, various species were identified, such as apple snail eggs. The event concluded with a candle-lighting ceremony to commemorate Earth Hour 2024, followed by a reflective sharing session led by our young participants, making the evening both memorable and inspiring.
Since 2023, we have actively engaged in the World-Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour Pledge for Nature. In line with this commitment, we switched off non-essential lights at PFCC, IOI Square, and IOI City Towers during the designated Earth Hour, resulting in total energy savings of 1,084 kWh.
